Gneeveguilla played Firies in Rd 1 of the O'Donoughe Cup on Sunday.
Firies opened the scoring with a strong breeze at there backs before Corneilus Buckley hit 1-02 in quick succession. Corneilus ran on to a good ball from Don Murphy and rounded his marker before firing an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net. Connor Herlihy followed up with a well taken goal of his own after being played in by Shane O'Sullivan to leave it 2-02 to 0-02 after just 16 minutes. Firies came back into it and kicked 3 unanswered points and looked to be dominating. An excellent save by Patrick O'Riordan diving to his left seemed to give Gneeveguilla a wake up call. Again it was Corneilus Buckley who wriggled his way past two defenders before finishing low into the left hand corner of the goal restoring Gneeveguilla's advantage. A point just before half time left Gneeveguilla leading 3--03 to 0-05 at half time.
It took 13 minutes for Gneeveguilla to take advantage of the strong breeze in the second half as Shane O'Sullivan Padraig Doyle, Connie O'Connor and Corneilus Buckley rattled off 4 more points. Danny O'Connor got Gneeveguilla's fourth goal when he followed trough on a high ball and rose highest in the box to put the game beyond doubt. A Micheal Brosnan point followed up by one more from Shane O'Sullivan and Padraig Doyle sealed the victory as referee Tom Moriarty blew the final whistle. Gneeveguilla now go on to face the winners of Kilcummin and Glenflesk in the next round.
